Volarević Vineyards
Our vineyard is located in the south of the beautiful Dalmatian coast, in the very heart of Komarna, the youngest vineyard in Croatia. The story begins in 2005 with karst melioration. This soil is very stony, and it took a lot of hard work, mechanization and resources to make it fertile. The procedure was carried out by removing thick roots and large stones that were grounded to a depth of 60 cm in order to ensure the best conditions for growing vines. The Komarna vineyard is a specific terroir where the cultivation of autochthonous Croatian varieties such as Plavac Mali, Tribidrag (Crljenak Kastelanski, Zifandel), Pošip, and Maraština have proved excellent. This is how the charming little coastal town, located 70 km northwest of Dubrovnik, became known as an important Croatian wine micro-location.
The entire vineyard area is exposed to the south and has three types of insolation: sun-vines, sun-stone-vines, sun-sea-vines. Due to the extreme conditions and high temperatures, the vineyard is also equipped with an irrigation system necessary during dry periods to allow the vines to survive.
- Altitude: 72-132m
- Annual insolation: 2650h
- Precipitation: average 750 mm
- Size: 15 ha (12 ha of vines)
- Soil: lithosol (limestone), stone percentage: 50%
The authentic climate and soil in the Komarne region together form the right formula for organic grape cultivation. Rocky soil, high temperatures during summer, constant Dalmatian winds, cold nights, harsh nature and biological diversity of flora and fauna create perfect conditions for grapes to develop to their best quality. Due to the difficult natural conditions and the firmness of the plavac maloga berry, minimal amounts of copper and sulfur are used in cultivation, which are prescribed by the Law on Ecological Agriculture.
